Sacred Circle

I carved this piece slowly, during spring 2016 outdoor art festivals. Many of my first carvings in the late nineties were expressive, and this piece was carved in that spirit. The German Expressionists were masters at going straight to the bone, and many of them turned to wood and linoleum to create intense graphic works.
A circle is by nature sacred and calming. In life, when people gather in a circle, there is immense invitation to truly hear one another, to sense our marginal nature and to gaze in awe at the beauty of our commonality.
When this unpretentious spirit extends to everyday life, we have a chance to access a place of deep compassion. The compassion is tangible; we feel empowered to contemplate how we can do our bit.
"Sacred Circle" is a 14 by 14 inch linocut, hand printed on a Takach etching press using Gamblin relief ink on 100%
cotton Somerset printmaking paper that is as thick as cardboard!
